What is a lithophane?
A lithophane is a thin plate whose thickness varies with the brightness of a picture. Light passes easily through the thin parts and barely through the thick ones, so when you hold the print against a light, the photo appears in soft shades. Lithophanes began as porcelain art in the 19th century; today a home 3D printer can make one in a few hours. This maker inverts the brightness for you, so dark areas of the photo become thick.
Best settings for a 3D-printed lithophane
Thinnest 0.6–0.8 mm and thickest 2.5–3.2 mm give a good range of tones on most printers. Use the High detail level for faces. Print with a 0.4 mm nozzle at 0.12 mm layer height, 100% infill and the plate standing upright so the shading is built from layer lines rather than one coarse top surface. White or natural PLA lets the most light through.
Choosing the right photo
Lithophanes show brightness only, not colour, so pick a photo with clear contrast between the subject and the background. Crop tightly – a face that fills the frame keeps more detail than a small figure in a wide scene. Very dark photos turn into a plate that is thick almost everywhere; brighten them a little before converting.
Lighting your lithophane
Any warm LED behind the print works: a window, a phone torch, or a small LED strip in a frame or box. Diffused light gives smoother shading than a bare point light. If the image looks washed out, print it thicker; if it looks too dark, lower the thickest value.
Frequently asked questions
Is this lithophane maker free?
Yes. Making lithophane STLs is free and unlimited, with no sign-up and no watermark.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The lithophane is generated in your browser and your photo never leaves your device.
Can I make a curved or cylinder lithophane?
This maker creates flat lithophanes. Flat plates are the easiest to print and fit in standard picture frames and light boxes.
What filament is best for lithophanes?
White or natural PLA. Coloured or dark filament blocks too much light for the picture to show.
