How it works
- 1
Drop your JPG
Photos, scans and drawings all work. JPEG and JPG files are the same thing.
- 2
Set size and height
Choose a width in mm, a base thickness and how tall the relief should be. The preview updates as you change them.
- 3
Download the STL
Save the file and open it in your slicer. Products like Keychain, Coaster or Sign give you a ready-made shape.
How a JPG becomes a 3D relief
A JPG is a flat grid of colored pixels, so there is no depth in it to extract. This converter creates a relief from brightness: each pixel's lightness decides the height at that point, and the result stands on a solid base plate. By default dark areas are raised and light areas stay low, which works well for portraits, drawings and logos. It is a relief, not a full 3D model of the scene; it looks right when viewed from the front.
Choosing a JPG that prints well
Pick an image with strong contrast and a simple background. Portraits and pets that fill the frame work better than wide scenes. JPG compression adds noise around edges, which can show up as small bumps in the print, so use the smoothing option or a higher quality original. Very dark or washed-out photos give a flat relief; brighten or add contrast in a photo editor first.
If you want one sharp level instead of smooth shading, turn on black and white with automatic level, which suits logos, signatures and line art.
Settings that work
Start with 100 mm wide, a 2 mm base and 3 mm relief. A detail value around 200 keeps file size reasonable for photos. For a keychain use the Keychain product (keyring hole included) at 40 to 50 mm. For a coaster, a round or rounded shape around 90 to 100 mm wide with a raised rim keeps drinks in place. Stamp mode mirrors the image automatically. Print with a 0.4 mm nozzle and 0.12 to 0.2 mm layers.
When a lithophane or a 3D figure is the better choice
If you want a photo that glows when lit from behind, use the lithophane maker instead, which makes thin and thick areas for light to pass through. If you want a full 3D figure of a pet, person or object from one photo, try the AI 3D tab, which guesses the shape and is described on its own page.
Frequently asked questions
Is this JPG to STL converter free?
Yes. Relief conversion is free and unlimited, with no sign-up and no watermark.
Is my JPG uploaded?
No. The image is processed in your browser and never leaves your device.
Does JPEG work as well as JPG?
Yes. They are the same format with different file extensions.
Will the STL be a full 3D model of my photo?
No. It is a relief, with height from brightness, seen best from the front. For a full figure from one photo, use the AI 3D tab.
Why do my edges look rough?
JPG compression adds noise. Use a higher quality image, raise the detail setting and turn on a little smoothing.
